Applying the Copper Layers

After designing the PCB and selecting the appropriate material, the next step is to apply the copper layers to the board. The copper layer PCB is applied using a process called lamination. In lamination, a copper foil is pressed onto the substrate material under high pressure and temperature. The process results in a single-layer copper-clad board.

Once the copper layers are applied, the next step is to remove the unwanted copper using etching. Etching involves applying a chemical solution to the copper-clad board, which dissolves the unwanted copper leaving the required copper traces. The etching process requires high precision and accuracy to ensure that the traces are of the correct width and length.

Applying Solder Mask and Silk Screen

After drilling, the PCB is coated with a solder mask, which is a layer of polymer that protects the copper traces from oxidation and prevents short circuits. The solder mask is applied using a process called screen printing. Silk screen printing is also applied to the PCB to label the components and provide additional information.

Applying Surface Finish

The final step in pcb board manufacturing is applying the surface finish. The surface finish protects the PCB from oxidation and provides a solderable surface for the components. Commonly used surface finishes include HASL, ENIG, and OSP. HASL is the most commonly used surface finish due to its low cost and ease of application.

Etching and Drilling

After etching, the next step is drilling. Holes are drilled on the PCB to accommodate the through-hole components. The drilling process requires high precision to ensure that the holes are of the correct size and placed in the right position.
